4,500+ pushpins but only one Nelson Mandela.
This collection is an ongoing series that portrays historical Black figures. Using the visual style of a 'double exposure' photograph, I am able to offer the viewer two visual planes; a portrait of an icon and a glimpse into their life story.
In the background is the sunset falling on Robben Island in South Africa where Nelson "Madiba" Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. In the forefront is the portrait of the the first Black President of South Africa. The juxtaposition of oppression and power in this the double exposure is the theme.
