MEET ANDRE WOOLERY

Artist Bio

Andre Woolery's artistic practice explores the intersection of identity, cultural reclamation, and reimagined realities through powerful portraiture and mixed media works. His pieces serve as interventions in the contemporary cultural landscape, deliberately infusing Black presence into spaces where it has historically been absent or marginalized. Through this process of visual remix and recontextualization, Woolery creates works that both challenge and transcend traditional narratives of representation.

Shaped by his experience as a first generation American to a Jamaican family, Woolery developed a nuanced understanding of how race and geography influence identity formation. This dual cultural perspective has become foundational to his artistic practice, informing works that navigate the complexities of personal and collective identity in the modern world. His unique trajectory from computer science at Duke University to the digital advertising world, and finally to fine art, brings a distinctive technological literacy to his creative process, allowing him to bridge multiple modes of artistic expression.

Woolery's artistic awakening came in 2009 when, after a successful career in advertising, he embarked on what was meant to be a month-long creative sabbatical. This brief respite evolved into a profound artistic journey, leading to his emergence as a voice in contemporary art while maintaining his position at the forefront of creative technology. This dual mastery of digital and traditional mediums allows him to create work that speaks to both historical art traditions and contemporary cultural dialogue.

His work has garnered attention in the art world, with exhibitions spanning from New York to Jamaica to Norway. Notable showings include the PRIZM Miami Art Basel Fair,  "eMerge: Danny Simmons and Artists on the Cusp" exhibition, "Art in Flux" in Harlem, and a celebrated solo exhibition at Manhattan's FrontRunner Gallery. His inclusion in the 2014 Jamaica Biennial marked a significant milestone in his artistic career, while his presence at SXSW demonstrated his ability to bridge the art and technology worlds. His works have found homes in notable private collections and public commissions in prestigious hotels, speaking to their resonance with contemporary audiences.

Through his art, Woolery engages in a form of cultural alchemy, transforming familiar imagery into powerful statements about possibility and representation. His portraits and cultural remixes don't simply document or critique - they actively reimagine and reconstruct, presenting viewers with visions of alternate realities that feel both revolutionary and inevitable. This approach has established him as an artist whose work not only comments on contemporary culture but actively participates in shaping its future direction.

Woolery continues to push the boundaries of contemporary art practice, creating works that serve as bridges between traditional artistic techniques and modern technological possibilities, between personal narrative and collective experience, and between the world as it is and as it could be. His ongoing exploration of identity, representation, and possibility marks him as a significant voice in the contemporary dialogue about art's role in social transformation.
