This powerful mixed media artwork features a portrait composed of thousands of white pushpins against a background of Frederick Douglass' slave papers dated October 25, 1845.

This meaningful art piece makes a thought-provoking addition to any space, particularly for those interested in history, social commentary, and innovative portraiture techniques.

The Story Behind the Art

This one is a personal favorite. I was deep into exploring how far I could push the pushpin medium when the idea for this piece—and a whole new technique—came to me. It became my first attempt at what I now call the Double Exposure style.

Around that time, I had been reading Frederick Douglass’ famous 1852 speech, “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”—and it hit me hard. That speech led me down a deep, inspiring rabbit hole into his life. I became obsessed with the idea of capturing not just who he was, but the journey—from slavery to becoming one of the most powerful orators of the abolition movement.

Somewhere in my deep Google dive, I stumbled across an auction listing for Douglass’s original slave papers. I knew instantly that those documents needed to be part of the story. That same night, I grabbed a blank canvas and started sketching out how I could scale those fragile pages into a five-foot-tall backdrop for a portrait that would honor both his past and his rise.

Then came weeks of layering. A subtle painted gradient. Dozens of trial pushpins. Refining the double exposure technique. Testing the vision. Until finally—it all came together.

That was the birth of a new series. A new style. A new way of storytelling.
